Why Are We So Downcast Sometimes?

Chelsea Thomas was born with Moebius Syndrome.  No matter how much she wanted to smile, for the first seven years of her life, she couldn't.  It was impossible.  Little Chelsea was born without a key nerve that transmits the "smile signal" from her brain to her face.  As a result, even when she was happy, her face was sad.

Fortunately, for Chelsea, a  team of doctors in California operated on the seven-year old in 1995.  They removed a muscle and a nerve from her leg and transplanted them beneath the surface of her face.  After the transplant, Chelsea Thomas was able to smile.

Whereas Moebius Syndrome is a very rare condition, unhappy Christians are only too common.  We are easily swayed by the circumstances that come our way or our emotional response to those circumstances.

Those who belong to the LORD have no cause to be downcast.  Because the LORD has taken responsibility for our lives and our future, we have reason to lift our heads up and be grateful.

Psalm 42:5-6 King James Version (KJV)

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

Prayer

Don't focus on what you need; give praise to the LORD for all HE has given you already.  Celebrate HIS faithfulness.  As you pray today, smile.
