The Ophel, as the City of David was called, was about a mile long and a half-mile wide. This rectangular-shaped strip of land gently sloped north across the Kidron Valley from the Mount of Olives. In this same section of land Solomon would later build the temple of the LORD.
The location of Israel's capital city was always a concern., It was perched among the Judean Hills. Because taller hills encircled the city, Jerusalem was vulnerable to sneak attacks by her enemies.
The King Jame Version of Pslams 121 is beautiful poetry, but it offers a misleading translation. "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help" gives the impression that the hills were a symbolic source of strength. They were not at all. They were a sourceof fear. Because the king lifts his eyes up to the mountains, naturally he wonders where his help will come from. Gratefully, he can answer for us based on his past experiences. His help will come from the LORD who made heaven and earth. When you need help, you need only to lift your eyes to heaven. From there, your help will come.
Psalm 121:1-2 King James Version (KJV)
121 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.
