Husband Albert L. Brown & Marie Van Brittan Brown invented the Home Security System

Along with her husband, Marie Van Brittan Brown invented a security system

Marie Van Brittan Brown

(1922-1999)

In 1966, Brown, along with the assistance of her husband, invented a security system which consisted of four peepholes, a sliding camera, television monitors, and two-way microphones.

These items created a closed-circuit television system for surveillance also known as CCTV. With multiple peepholes, the sliding camera was able to capture images of people who were different heights.

The two-way microphones allowed Brown to communicate with the person outside. She also had a remote that would allow her to unlock the door at a safer distance. Lastly, she could press an emergency button that would send an alarm to police or security.

In 1969, Brown and her husband received a patent for the invention under the U.S. Patent number 3,482,037.

Her invention was recognized in The New York Times and she received an award from the National Scientists Committee for her work.

Brown passed away at the age of 76 in 1999, but her legacy continues.  Brown’s contribution to home security led her invention to be cited in 32 subsequent patent applications.

Her invention formed a system that is still relevant in today’s society with use in places such as  banks, office buildings, and apartment complexes.

African American inventor Marie Van Brittan Brown contributed to a safer society with her invention of the first home security system.  Her invention was the first closed-circuit television security system and paved the way for modern home security systems used today.

Brown was born in 1922 in Jamaica, Queens, New York. She started off her career working as a nurse. Her husband, Albert Brown, was an electronics technician.

As a nurse, Brown worked long hours and would return home late at night. Her husband, too, had irregular hours so she was often alone at night.

Fearful of being vulnerable in a high crime neighborhood, Brown decided to figure out  a way to see who was at her door if she heard knocking.

The Brown’s invention laid the foundation for later security systems that make use of its features such as video monitoring, remote-controlled door locks, push-button alarm triggers, instant messaging to security providers and police, as well as two-way voice communication.

Their invention is still used by small businesses, small offices, single-family homes, and multi-unit dwellings such as apartments and condominiums.

The Browns’ patent was later referenced by thirteen other inventors including some as recently as 2013.

Who is the HOLY SPIRIT and  what does HE do in our lives?

But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Of sin, because they believe not on me;

10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Marie Van Brittan Brown & her husband invented the Video Home Security System

Marie Van Brittan Brown

(1922-1999)

Marie and Albert Brown filed for a patent on August 1, 1966, under the title, “Home Security System Utilizing Television Surveillance.”

Their application was approved on December 2, 1969. Brown’s invention gained her well-deserved recognition, including an award from the National Scientists Committee and an interview with The New York Times on December 6, 1969.

At the opposite side of the door a camera was attached with the ability to slide up and down to allow the person to see through each peephole.

The camera picked up images that would reflect on the monitor via a wireless system. The monitor could be placed in any part of the house to allow you to see who was at the door.

There was also a voice component to enable Brown to speak to the person outside. If the person was perceived to be an intruder, the police would be notified with the push of a button.

If the person was a welcome or expected visitor, the door could be unlocked via remote control.

Marie Van Brittan Brown's original invention was comprised of peepholes, a camera, monitors, and a two-way microphone.

(1922-1999)

Brown’s security system was the basis for the two-way communication and surveillance features of modern security.

Her original invention was comprised of peepholes, a camera, monitors, and a two-way microphone.

The final element was an alarm button that could be pressed to contact the police immediately.

Three peepholes were placed on the front door at different height levels. The top one was for tall persons, the bottom one was for children, and the middle one was for anyone of average height.

Marie Brown worked as a nurse and her husband, Albert Brown, worked as an electronics technician

Marie Van Brittan Brown

(1922-1999)

Marie Brown worked as a nurse and her husband, Albert Brown, worked as an electronics technician. Their work hours were not the standard nine-to-five, and the crime rate in their Queens, New York City neighborhood was very high.

Even when the police were contacted in the event of an emergency, the response time tended to be slow.

As a result, Brown looked for ways to increase her level of personal security. She needed to create a system that would allow her to know who was at her home and contact relevant authorities as quickly as possible.

Marie Van Brittan Brown was the inventor of the first home security system

Marie Van Brittan Brown was the inventor of the first home security system. Brown was born in Queens, New York, on October 22, 1922, and resided there until her death on February 2, 1999, at age seventy-six.

Her father was born in Massachusetts and her mother was from Pennsylvania.

The patent for the invention was filed in 1966, and it later influenced modern home security systems that are still used today.

Brown’s invention was inspired by the security risk that her home faced in the neighborhood where she lived.

Marie Van Brittan Brown

 (October 30, 1922 – February 2, 1999)

Marie Van Brittan Brown  was a nurse and an innovator. In 1966, she invented a video home security system[1] along with her husband Albert Brown, an electronics technician.[2]

In the same year, they applied for a patent for their innovative security system, which was granted in 1969. Brown was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York;[3] she died there at the age of 76 in 1999.

The first closed-circuit television security system invented by Marie Van Brittan Brown

Marie Van Brittan Brown

 (October 30, 1922 – February 2, 1999)

The invention was essentially the first closed-circuit television security system and is the predecessor to modern home systems today.[7]

It was the foundation for video monitoring, remote-controlled door locks, push-button alarm triggers, instant messaging to security providers and police, as well as two-way voice communication.[4]

Brown’s invention has led to the creation of many new home security systems that rely on video systems, remote door locks, and quick emergency response actions.

These systems have become the leading security for homes and small businesses all over the world. The fame of Brown's device also led to the more prevalent CCTV surveillance in public areas.[8]

Marie Van Brittan Brown - The Black Woman Who Invented the Home Security System

Marie Van Brittan Brown

  (October 30, 1922 – February 2, 1999)

Although the system was originally intended for domestic uses, many businesses began to adopt Brown's system given its effectiveness.

As a result of the innovation of a security system, she received an award from the National Science Committee,[3] officially making her a "part of an elite group of African-American inventors and scientists.

Brown was quoted in the New York Times as saying that with her invention “a woman alone could set off an alarm immediately by pressing a button, or if the system were installed in a doctor’s office, it might prevent holdups by drug addicts.”[6]

Marie Van Brittan Brown along with her husband invented a video home security system

 Marie  Van  Brittan  Brown

  (October 30, 1922 – February 2, 1999)

Marie knew this would only help them know who was at the door or attempting to enter the home but would not improve the emergency response time.

Knowing that the police or security response was slow she decided that there must be a quicker way for them to alert the authorities.

To do so she invented a system that contacted police and emergency responders with just the tap of a button.

She and her husband cited other inventors in their patent, such as Edward D. Phiney[5] and Thomas J. Reardon. Even now, over fifty years later, her invention is still being used by smaller businesses and living facilities.[4]

Marie Van Brittan Brown invented a video home security system

Marie Van Brittan Brown

 (October 30, 1922 – February 2, 1999)

Inspired by how long it would take the police to arrive in her neighborhood, Brown invented the first home security system.[3] Her work hours were not the standard 9am – 5pm, and the crime rate in their Queens, New York City neighborhood was very high.[4]

Marie started her invention by creating three peepholes[4] in the door to provide access for tall and average height people along with her children.

The next step was setting up a camera that could adjust from peephole to peephole to allow people inside the house to look outside to see who was there.

Marie wanted to find a way to view who was outside the house from any room and decided a wireless television system would work best.

To do this, she used a radio-controlled wireless system that could stream the video to any television in the house.  Along with the video system, Marie and her husband created a two-way microphone system that would allow for communication between the family and the person at the door. She also created a system to unlock the door remotely.

Marie Van Brittan Brown invented a video home security system along with her husband Albert Brown, an electronics technician.

 (October 30, 1922 – February 2, 1999)

Marie Van Brittan Brown's father was born in Massachusetts and her mother was from Pennsylvania, both were African-American.[4]

Brown and her husband lived at 151-158 & 135th Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, New York.[5] She worked as a nurse and her husband was an electrician, so they did not always have normal hours or simultaneously work.

Her mother, father, and grandmother all had the nickname "Dee Dee". She didn't have any siblings.[6] Marie and Brown had two children. Their daughter, followed in her mother's footsteps and became a nurse and inventor.[4]
