Research Chemist of Medicinal drugs from Plants --- Dr. Percy Lavon Julian

Percy research at Glidden changed direction in 1940 when he began work on synthesizing progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone from the plant sterols stigmasterol and sitosterol, isolated from soybean oil by a foam technique he invented and patented.

 At that time clinicians were discovering many uses for the newly discovered hormones. However, only minute quantities could be extracted from hundreds of pounds of the spinal cords of animals.

In 1940 Julian was able to produce 100 lb of mixed soy sterols daily, which had a value of $10,000 ($84,000 today) as sex hormones. 

Julian was soon ozonizing 100 pounds daily of mixed sterol dibromides. The soy stigmasterol was easily converted into commercial quantities of the female hormone progesterone, and the first pound of progesterone he made, valued at $63,500 ($532,000 today), was shipped to the buyer, Upjohn,in an armored car. Production of other sex hormones soon followed^.

 

His work made possible the production of these hormones on a larger industrial scale, with the potential of reducing the cost of treating hormonal deficiencies. 

 Julian and his co-workers obtained patents for Glidden on key processes for the preparation of progesterone and testosterone from soybean plant sterols.

 Product patents held by a former cartel of European pharmaceutical companies had prevented a significant reduction in wholesale and retail prices for clinical use of these hormones in the 1940s. He saved many lives with this discovery.

Dr. Percy Lavon Julian

He later started his own company to synthesize steroid intermediates from the wild Mexican yam.

 His work helped greatly reduce the cost of steroid intermediates to large multinational pharmaceutical companies, helping to significantly expand the use of several important drugs.

Julian received more than 130 chemical patents. He was one of the first African Americans to receive a doctorate in chemistry.

 He was the first African-American chemist inducted into the National Academy of Sciences, and the second African-American scientist inducted (behind David Blackwell) from any field.

He was a research chemist and a pioneer in the chemical synthesis of medicinal drugs from plants.

Dr. Julian was the first to synthesize the natural product physostigmine.

Plus  he was a pioneer in the industrial large-scale chemical synthesis of the human hormones progesterone and testosterone from plant sterols such as stigmasterol and sitosterol.

 His work laid the foundation for the steroid drug industry's production of cortisone, other corticosteroids, and birth control pills.

Heart rate, also known as pulse, is the number of times a person's heart beats per minute. Normal heart rate varies from person to person, but a normal range for adults is 60 to 100 beats per minute, according to the Mayo Clinic.




 It pumps about  55-80 ml (1/3 cup) of blood with each beat for adults and around 25-85 ml per beat for children.

 An adult heart pumps about 6,000-7,500 liters 
(1,500-2,000 gallons) of blood daily.

The average adult body contains about five quarts of blood which continually circulates throughout the body.

Plasma: The liquid part of the blood and lymphatic fluid, which makes up about half of the volume of blood. 

Plasma is devoid of cells and, unlike serum, has not clotted. Blood plasma contains antibodies and other proteins. 

It is taken from donors and made into medications for a variety of blood-related conditions.

What Is Plasma?

Plasma is the often forgotten component of blood. White blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets are essential to body function, but plasma also plays a crucial, and mostly unrecognized, job.

 It carries these blood components throughout the body as the fluid in which they travel. 

 Plasma makes up the biggest part of your blood: about 55%. Even though blood appears red when you see it outside the body, plasma itself is a pale yellow color. 

 It’s the liquid part of your blood. One of its jobs is keeping your blood pressure in a healthy range. 

 It also carries important proteins, minerals, nutrients, and hormones to the right places in your body.

First Black Female To Cover White House ----Alice Allison Dunnigan

Born 1906 Passed Away 1983 First African Amerian Female ------White House News Correspondent-----Alice Allison Dunnigan

 

After completing a teaching course at Kentucky Normal and Industrial Institute, she taught Kentucky History in the Todd County School System, which was segregated at the time.

 Noticing that her class was not aware of the African American contributions to the Commonwealth, she started to prepare Kentucky Fact Sheets as supplements to required text.

 They were collected and formed into a manuscript in 1939, and finally published in 1982 with the title The Fascinating Story of Black Kentuckians: Their Heritage and Tradition.

From 1947 to 1961, she served as chief of the Washington bureau of the Associated Negro Press. In 1947 she was a member of the Senate and House of Representatives press galleries, and in 1948 she became a White House correspondent. 

In 1961 she was named education consultant to the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity. From 1967 to 1970 she was as an associate editor with the President's Commission on Youth Opportunity.

 Dunnigan was the first African-American female correspondent to receive White House credentials, and the first black female member of the Senate and House of Representatives press galleries.

 She wrote an autobiography entitled Alice A. Dunnigan: A Black Woman's Experience. 
She also has a Kentucky State Historical Commission marker dedicated to her.
